New race announced by the New York Road Runners

New York Road Runners

The New York Road Runners, the club that will run the New York City Marathon, has announced the return of their scheduled races since the outbreak began.

On Thursday, the club announced that the annual New York Mini 10K would be held on June 12. Except for the previous year, the 10-kilometer women-only event has been held annually since 1972.

Kerryn Hempel, the organization’s interim chief executive officer, said, “This is our first real table setting.” This will not be the first time the club has held a race since the outbreak began.

Last fall, the organization held a series of “return to racing” events as pilots, allowing very small areas to race with safety standards. As a result, the event had temperature checks, a staggered start, and different runner corridors, among other factors. According to HEMPEL, the NYRR now has the confidence to press forward with its first regularly planned race since March 2020.

safety protocols

The field for the Mini 10K will be smaller than in previous years, with a cap of 1,200 runners. There will also be safety protocols, such as mandating runners to wear masks at the start and end of the event.

With 25 elite runners expected to compete, this will be the first time NYRR has invited elite racers since the 2019 New York City Marathon. Sarah Hall, the 2019 Mini 10K champion, will defend her title.

The reports come as runners prepare cautiously optimistic for the return of the major road race. Ms. Kempel pondered what this means for the New York City Marathon, which is on many people’s minds.

“We’re predicting that the marathon will take place,” she stated. “We’re saying the marathon will happen,” she said. “It’s more about how it’s supposed to look and how many people we can fit on the course.
