Polish police said they had been unable to discover the cause of death at the scene.

Polish police reported on Saturday that the death of a young Syrian man was found near the Belarusian border in Poland, escalating international tensions over a migration crisis that the European Union accuses Minsk of orchestrating.

Thousands of Middle Eastern migrants are gathered in frigid temperatures on the border between Belarus and EU member nations Poland and Lithuania, refusing to pass. Some have already died, and as the severe winter weather sets in, there are concerns for the safety of the remainder.

“The body of Syrian was identified yesterday in the woods near the border, near Wolka Terechowska,” Podlaska Police said on Twitter. The news comes as international tensions over the crisis rise, with Belarus’ neighbors warning that the situation might develop into a military conflict and US President Joe Biden voicing alarm.

On Saturday, Belarus said that the number of migrants arriving at a makeshift border camp was rising every day. A group of up to 100 had overpassed into Polish territory.

“A group of migrants has gathered near the crossing point. They are, in fact, on Polish soil. According to the Polish Border Guard, the Belarusian military divided a part of the temporary fence erected by Poland to dissuade migrants during the night.

Polish Interior Minister Mariusz Kaminski told private radio station RMF FM on Saturday that he will meet with United States Director of National Intelligence Avril Haines next week to discuss the matter.

He estimated that roughly 1,500 individuals were tented at the border, with the number increasing. On Friday, the Polish Border Guard reported 219 attempts to cross the border unlawfully. On Friday, 144 migrants attempted to enter Lithuania, according to the Lithuanian border guard.
