Ukraine and Russia’s war takes pace:

As news leaked early Thursday of the Russian aggression of Ukraine, Stan Serebriakov and his spouse could do little to support their loved ones halfway around the planet besides pick up their phones.

“We phone right away to our families, told them to wake up,” stated Serebriakov, who is from Ukraine but has been staying with his wife in Halifax since 2017.

Though many individuals voiced shock and disbelief as Russian President Vladimir Putin announced a battle on Ukraine, launching a full-scale invasion on many fronts, the attack has not shocked some Ukrainians. After Russia annexed Crimea in 2014, numerous say they lived in a continuous state of tension.

But now they are scared. “There is no secure place in Ukraine at the moment,” Serebriakov spoke Thursday in an interview.

Serebriakov, who left Ukraine in 2014, stated he and his wife’s household and friends who stay in the nation had been readying for an attack, but they held on to expect that other countries would be able to talk Putin down.

Serebriakov lived approximately 200 kilometers from Donetsk, a city held by Russian-backed separatists eight years ago. After the annexation of Crimea, Serebriakov stated he felt he had to leave.

“It was a difficult choice to go. But it felt … Canada is going to be a suitable place, safe,” he said.

Anastasiia Mereshchuk has been in Halifax for eight years. She and her spouse have been unable to return to Ukraine to see family and friends for the previous three.
