“2021 has truly been a landmark year for Canadian artists and music on TikTok, with so many amazing music moments to celebrate,” says Adam Burchill, TikTok Canada’s Head of Music, in a statement issued to iPhone in Canada.
“Justin Bieber serenade us LIVE on Valentine’s Day, welcomed icons like Avril Lavigne and The Tragically Hip to the platform, catapulted emerging acts like JESSIA and Lilyisthatyou into the mainstream, and helped relaunch MuchMusic, one of Canada’s most influential pop culture brands.”
From discovering new artists to rediscovering old favorites, our global community of one billion people and the music industry at large have taken notice of the richness and diversity of talent Canada has to offer. There’s no denying that music begins and ends on TikTok.”
“Following the footsteps of artists like The Kid LAROI, Tai Verdes, and Tate McRae who made TikTok’s index of Emerging Artists in 2020 also had banner years in 2021,” TikTok explains. “Canadians bbno$ and RealestK used TikTok to raise their profiles in a big way this year and are only two of the twenty.”
The song also ranked fourth on TikTok’s top global tracks and made the complete ten Top US Pop Tracks list.
Most of these songs were released between the early and mid-2000s and featured artists ranging from Destiny’s Child to Reba McEntire. According to TikTok’s music report, these tracks were frequently used on the app to show nostalgia, whether to celebrate a graduation or pay tribute to a late loved one.
The result of TikTok’s “global” top songs of 2021 is a mix of new and established artists. TikTok has proven to be more than capable of fostering music’s next big stars over the past two years, with several of their songs making it into the top 20 of the year. Masked Wolf’s viral hit “Astronaut in the Ocean” takes the top spot, followed by “Beggin'” by Mneskin, a breakout rock band.
