Nova Scotia NDP holds its annual general meeting with the housing panel

Nova Scotia NDP

Key Takeaways:

  • Gary Burrill and the Nova Scotia NDP have been focused on the housing issue for a long time.
  • In August, Burrill made rent control a key election issue and spoke out during violent evictions from temporary shelters.

On Saturday, the party devoted a portion of its annual general meeting (AGM) to the issue described as a crisis in Nova Scotia, particularly in the Halifax Regional Municipality.

Amanda Mombourquette, co-chair of the Strait-Richmond Housing Matters Coalition; Colleen Cameron, chair of the Antigonish Affordable Housing Society; Victoria Levack, a member of the Permanent, Accessible, Dignified, and Safer (PADS) Community Network; Kate Macdonald, a co-founder of GameChangers902 and branch manager at the Halifax North Memorial Public Library; and Hannah Wood, chair of the Halifax-Peninsula.

According to Colleen Cameron, an advocate based in Antigonish, the housing crisis is not limited to urban areas.

“We are just getting ready to open 12 new units,” she explains. “We have received 70 applications for those 12 units, and I am getting calls every week.” People are in desperate need.” Cameron considers housing to be “one of the most important determinants of health.”

According to Mombourquette, access to services is also more challenging in rural areas, frequently requiring travel. “Housing challenges look a lot different here,” says Richmond County’s warden.

“It’s often hidden homelessness, and it manifests itself in things like couch surfing, especially among young people and people struggling with mental health and addictions.”

Advocacy groups like Macdonald recognize that solutions for addictions and mental health are also required, and new voices must be heard. “Yeah, it is about housing, but it is also about everything else,” says Macdonald. “It is about all the oppression in other systems as well because everything is interconnected.”
