“The concept and design of the new Vancouver Art Gallery will reflect the Coast Salish worldview,” said Skwetsimeltxw Willard “Buddy” Joseph, art, and design advisor at Skwetsimeltxw Vancouver Art Gallery. Local artists Debra Sparrow, Chepximiya Siyam’ Janice George, Skwetsimeltxw Willard ‘ Buddy’ Joseph, and Angela George were hired as art and design consultants for the project in March 2021.

The project is intended to create around 3,000 jobs in the construction industry and 1,000 permanent jobs in the tourism sector. The art gallery said it had an additional $160 million to raise from the public and private sectors, and staff hopes the donation will encourage others to support the new venture.

The new building will be between Cambie and Beatty streets, with the front entrance on Georgia Street. It will include more than 80,000 square meters of exhibition space, along with a visible art depot, theatre, library and research center, art studios, accommodation for guest and preschool artists, and a kindergarten for the visual arts on a 40,000 square meter terrace.

The building will also house the Asian Art Institute, a new skills and communication center, and a multifunctional local community.
